Archimedes Screw Pump to the Rescue at Rena Oil Spill New Zealand
Heavy fuel recovery machinery will be lifted onto the platforms attached to the Rena today and an Archimedes screw pump will be inserted into the tank to extract the oil.
The cold oil has hardened to the consistency of Marmite, which is why the special type of screw pump is needed to get the oil out.
The Archimedes screw pump is normally used in the waste water industry to pump sewage that is full of solids mixed with the water.
Archimedes screw pumps are usually open from the top when used on land these would not be the case in these situation under water.
The Archimedes screw will have to be enclosed screw pump to stop the oil from escaping or leaking in the water,
I presume as I have not seen any images of the special Archimedean screw pump being used in the extraction of the oil
Nearly one thousand birds have died as a result of the oil from the stricken vessel Rena off the coast of Tauranga. A wildlife facility has been set up at Te Maunga to care for oiled birds.
Manager Brent Stevenson says as well as birds, four fur seals have been brought in to the facility, three of which will be released by tomorrow.
He says there are about 130 oiled birds being cared for, most of which are little blue penguins. Mr Stevenson says the penguins have held up reasonably well, and around half of them have been completely cleaned of oil.
The position of the grounded ship Rena in the Bay of Plenty is not as stable as previously thought.
Head of Maritime New Zealand’s salvage operation, Bruce Anderson, says while the bow of the ship is placed firmly on the reef, the stern is hanging in space.
He says while it has stayed there so far, it is impossible to say what will happen when the weather turns next week. Mr Anderson says divers have inspected both sides of the ship, and the data they provide will help understand exactly what is holding the ship in place.
