Archimedes screw turbine hydro scheme advances after funds raised

An Archimedes screw turbine hydro-electric scheme is advancing to its next phase having raised £125,000 through a community share issue in three months.

The Esk Valley Community Energy Group, which has been advised by the Co-operative Enterprise Hub,

is seeking to set up a small-scale hydro-electric turbine, known as an Archimedes screw turbine, in the River Esk near Whitby.

It recently launched a community share issue and set out its case to generate sustainable energy on the River Esk in Ruswarp with £125,000 raised in a little over three months for the screw turbine.

When completed, set for in summer 2012, a ‘fish-friendly’ 50kw Archimedes screw hydroelectric turbine is set to generate about 200,000kWh of sustainable energy in a typical year, cutting an estimated 3,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifetime.

Colin Mather, a retired civil engineer and chairman of Esk Valley Community Energy Group, said; “We are delighted with the response to the share issue and, although, we know that there is still a lot of hard work ahead, it illustrates that by working together, co-operating, amazing things can be achieved.”
