Hydro electricity will be at the forefront of renewable technologies, leading the global green energy growth.
According to a new report, over the next quarter of a century, hydro power will account for 55% of all renewable energy added worldwide.
The ‘International Energy Outlook 2011′ predicts that between 2008 and 2035, globalelectrical renewable energy generation would grow an average of 3.1%pa, withelectricity generation from renewables increasing from 19% in 2008 to 23% in 2030.
Key elements of the reported pointed to:
4.6 trillion kilowatt-hours of new renewable generation will be added over the projection period.
Of that, 55% – 2.5 trillion kilowatt-hours – will be achieved by hydro power.
Aside from hydro, the majority of renewable technologies are not able to compete economically with fossil fuels during the projection period, except in a few regions or niche markets.
The primary economic motivation for the uptake of renewables is down to Government incentives and policies.
The greatest increase in hydro electric growth was outside the developed countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This is largely due to hydro electric plant projects in areas such as Brazil, India and China.
The generation of hydro power globally would increase from 3.1 trillion kWh in 2008 to 5.6 trillion kWh by 2035.
