Hydrodynamic Screw Turbine

Hydrodynamic Screw Turbine

Hydrodynamic screw turbine harnesses energy from the falling water, Archimedes screw or hydrodynamic screw turbine captures hydro energy along its entire length. Hydro power is transferred into rotational movement of the hydro-screw turbine and subsequently drives a generator which generates electricity.

Hydro-dynamic screw turbine harnesses energy from the falling water

Whereas a conventional turbine, wheel or propeller comes in contact with water at only one point along the water’s drop, the Archimedean hydrodynamic screw turbine captures hydro energy along its entire length. Hydro power is transferred into rotational movement of the hydro-screw turbine and subsequently drives a generator which generates electricity.

Hydro-dynamic Screw Turbine

Hydrodynamic Screw turbines can be used on low head hydro sites

and anywhere where suitable flows and heads exist, , other potential uses include:

  • Rivers

  • Cooling water outlets from power stations

  • Industrial process water (for example paper or steel mills)

Advantages of  Hydrodynamic screws over turbines and waterwheels are:

Hydro screw has High Efficiency:

  • The hydro-screw maintains high efficiency in a wide range of flows

  • Higher efficiencies than comparable turbines and waterwheels

  • The screw continues to harness power from the water even during low summer river levels, down to 20% of the design flow

  • Efficiencies of up to 90%

Screw turbines are Simple and Reliable:

  • Low rational speeds

  • Minimal components subject to wear

  • Design life of 25-40 years

  • Low maintenance

Hydro-dynamic screw turbine are Fish Friendly:

  • Proven research and testing have shown the fish friendliness of the hydro-screw

  • Each segment of water is moved as whole so fish up to 1 meter long can move down the screw in each and emerge unharmed at the bottom

  • The screw is a common method of fish transfer in America

  • This unique feature has led to approval from the Environment Agency

Hydro screws don’t need costly fine screening:

  • Due the screw’s ability to safely pass large items and fish, only an inexpensive coarse screen is needed to protect the screw

Hydrodynamic turbine Capabilities are:

  • Can be designed for flows ranging from as little as 100 liter/s up to 15,000 liter/s

  • Can be installed in places where the head (fall of water) is as low as 1m, ranging to up to 12m

  • The stable and consistent yearly output from the hydro-screw gives a more predictable and reliable source of electricity

  • The yearly consistency also lends itself to an overall greater output than a comparable turbine

Hydro-dynamic turbines have Comparatively Low Civil Costs:

  • Units can be designed to fit in with existing civil structures; weirs, dams etc.

  • New installation can be as simple as laying an upper and lower foundation

There are a number of applicants of hydrodynamic screws.

  • Replacement for small turbine units which require reconditioning.

  • Replacement for defective water-wheels.

  • Clean water outlet of sewage treatment plants.

  • Residual water screw for installation into existing channel or weir.

  • Production of low-level hydrodynamic power in former irrigation weirs.
