The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a USD 71.1mn loan for the Lom-Pangar Hydroelectric project in Cameroon, Ghana Business News reported.

The project, which will add over 5,000 MW to the hydroelectric power potential of the Sanaga River,

will help provide rural electrification to some 150 localities, including nine administrative centers, and will connect 10,000 new subscribers in the East Region of Cameroon to the national grid, according to the AfDB.

The total value of the Lom-Pangar Hydroelectric project is estimated at USD 419.2mn, as the remaining part of the financing will be provided by the World Bank,

the European Investment Bank, the Development Bank of Central African States and the French Development Agency. The new hydro power plant will reduce the technical and structural difficulties that the energy sector in Cameroon faces and will improve the country’s energy infrastructure.
