Mini-hydroelectric Projects’ success will pave way for hydro power in rural villages

by Marilyn Ten.

SAMARAHAN: The success of three apprentice mini-hydroelectric projects at three villages will open the way for ten other villages in the rural areas of Sarawak to benefit from a 24-hour electricity supply.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid said that the success of the projects at Kampung Semulong Ulu, Kampung Sengai and Kampung Stamang in Batang Ai would determine whether the projects could be expanded to other areas.

“Kampung Semulong Ulu and Kampung Sengai are presently under development whereas the project will commence at Kampung Stamang soon,” he told reporters here yesterday.

The mini-hydroelectric project is part of Unimas’ community based project in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKLW) where

Unimas became the first university to develop a sustainable in-stream horizontal micro hydro turbine generator prototype that would provide electricity in rural areas in the state.

“We are currently carrying out analysis research on ten other villages and if deemed suitable, we will submit a proposal to the same ministry to undertake the Mini-hydroelectric project,” said Khairuddin.

He estimated that the project would cost an estimated total of RM1.7 million notwithstanding the actual costs, which would come up to around RM20 to RM30 million.

“Nevertheless, we are using recyclable materials to reduce the cost of construction,” he added.
