Archimedes hydro screw industry gets Royal endorsement

Windsor castle announced to the BBC News that two Archimedes screw generators are going to provide the Queens residence its own Hydroelectricity . Making it the first royal palace to adopted the Government Feed In Tariffs (FITs) that pays individuals to generate Renewable Energy.

Since the introduction of feed in tariffs FITs In March 2010 for Hydro Power: the Hydro Energy and especially the Hydro Screw has had a much needed BOOM.

Further BOOST has been received  from some high profile Archimedes screw installations, like the installation of two Archimedean screw turbines being installed at the QUEEN’S  favorite residence at Windsor castle, and the completion of the Tees barrage  world’s first combined screw pumps and screw generators at one of the 2012 London Olympic venues.

The Archimedes screw turbine industry Is dominated by manufacturers based in Holland and Germany; however, there are twice as many manufactures of Archimedes screw pumps that are used in the waste water and Sewage industry through out the world. Pershore Hydropower scheme wins district council backing

   A HYDROPOWER project on the River Avon at Pershore has gained the district council’s support and a £300,000 loan backed by the taxpayer.

Local landowner Charles Hudson’s proposal to build a water powered generator at Pershore weir has won over councillors at Wychavon where the executive board agreed to recommend a loan to help finance the project.

The £300,000 loan would be provided with an interest rate of 10 per cent a year, and with a life of 10 years.

Mr Hudson said: “Reducing our carbon footprint is a flag Wychavon wants to fly, plus the funding agreement would help provide an income for the Pershore Market Town initiative which needs £30,000 a year.

“Of course there will also be the chance for the council to buy green energy cheaper than it is available on the energy market.”

The hydropower project is estimated to cost £1 million to build and would generate enough power for more than 200 homes.

Once finished, Mr Hudson intends to sell the electricity commercially, rather than to National Grid, and one potential customer could be Wychavon Leisure Centre which could use about 90 per cent of the power generated.

The design incorporates an ‘Archimedes screw’ style generator that would be located on the east bank and includes a ‘fish pass’ that could be used by canoeists and kayakers.

Wychavon officers have suggested the area might even be able to accommodate a much larger water leisure facility, or use funding available through the Olympic games to set up Pershore as “a vibrant water sport centre”.

Council leader Paul Middlebrough said: “It’s a fantastic idea and we’re keen to move forward, which is why we want to provide this loan of £300,000. It’s a commercial opportunity, and Mr Hudson is also putting his money into the project.”

When the screw is rotated, the water confined between two successive blades, the wall of the casing, and the shaft is lifted.

Archimedes Screw Generator produces Electricity at low-head Hydro sites

A centuries-old technology is being used today to generate electricity. The design of the Archimedes screw is attributed to Archimedes of Syracuse in the 3rd century BC. Originally, this technology was used to lift water up an incline. Recently, scientists determined that it is possible to produce electricity by letting water drop through the screw.

 

The screw generator consists of a central shaft with a helical blade, like a screw. Allowing water to flow downward through the screw causes it to rotate. This rotation can be used to produce electricity using a generator. The screw generator is safe for fish to pass through and can serve as a fish ladder. The screw generator can be used in locations with relatively low head (up to 10 meters) and requires minimal maintenance.

 

There are many companies that manufacture the Archimedes screw generator. Units are available in capacities up to 500 kW.

 

The Archimedes hydro screw  is being used in several applications in UK and Europe,due to its fish friendly qualities .

In May 2010, a contract was awarded to supply and install four Archimedes screw generators at a training camp location for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This work is part of an ongoing upgrade of the Tees Barrage whitewater course. The screws will pump water to provide the course. When not needed, the screws can use the river water to generate electricity.

Hydrodynamic screw is the Archimedes screw pump in reverse, work by making use of the energy of moving, flowing, or falling water to spin and rotate the Archimedes screw. Archimedes is generally regarded as the greatest mathematician, Inventor and scientist of Greek antiquity.

Mathematician: Archimedes was obsessed with mathematics.

He would become so involved in his work that he would forget to eat. He scribbled notes and figures on any available surface. When outside, he used a stick to draw on the ground; when inside, he used his finger to trace figures in the olive oil on his skin.

 

Out of this obsession came many of his greatest theories and proofs, such as the means for approximating square roots, the value of pi (the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter), and the creation of a way to describe very large numbers. He also devised methods for calculating areas and volumes 2,000 years before the invention of calculus. In addition, Archimedes proved that the volume of a sphere is two-thirds the volume of a circumscribed cylinder. He considered this proof his greatest accomplishment and even requested that a representation of a sphere inside a cylinder be inscribed on his tomb.
