Archimedes hydro screw industry gets Royal endorsement

Windsor castle announced to the BBC News that two Archimedes screw generators are going to provide the Queens residence its own Hydroelectricity . Making it the first royal palace to adopted the Government Feed In Tariffs (FITs) that pays individuals to generate Renewable Energy.

Since the introduction of feed in tariffs FITs In March 2010 for Hydro Power: the Hydro Energy and especially the Hydro Screw has had a much needed BOOM.

Further BOOST has been received  from some high profile Archimedes screw installations, like the installation of two Archimedean screw turbines being installed at the QUEEN’S  favorite residence at Windsor castle, and the completion of the Tees barrage  world’s first combined screw pumps and screw generators at one of the 2012 London Olympic venues.

The Archimedes screw turbine industry Is dominated by manufacturers based in Holland and Germany; however, there are twice as many manufactures of Archimedes screw pumps that are used in the waste water and Sewage industry through out the world. These same companies are dominating the screw generator industry or working towards converting their screw pumps in to screw turbines, as it happens, the turbine is just the reverse of the Archimedean screw pump.

The Screw Pump: An Archimedes’ Invention Still in Use Today

Archimedes of Syracuse was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, invetor, and astronomer.

He is typically regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity.  He is most known for his explanation of the principle of the lever and for the first theoretical calculation of the value of pi (π).

 

One of the most valuable inventions credited with designing is the Archimedes Screw Pump which is a device used to transport water from a low area to a higher elevation.   The design consists of a screw inside a hollow pipe and is turned by a windmill or by manual labor.  As the bottom end of the tube turns, it scoops up a volume of water which will slide up in the spiral tube as the shaft is turned, until it finally pours out from the top of the tube.

 

The Archimedes screw is basically a positive-displacement pump.

One end of the pump is placed in a low-lying liquid source and then tilted up into a discharge tank or other suitable location. To move the liquid upward, the screw would be rotated.  As the screw moves, it scoops up a small amount of water into the first pocket.  On the next turn of the screw, the first pocket of water moves to the second pocket, and a new scoop of water enters the first pocket. This motion continues until finally the first scoop of water comes out at the other end.

 

The screw was mostly used for draining water out of mines or other areas of low lying water and to transport water from low-lying areas up to irrigation ditches.

The design is so effective that it is still being used in many modern-day applications.
The design is used to lift wastewater in treatment plants, to lift granulated solids such as coal and grain,to irrigate agricultural fields without electrical pumps,

and even to lift water at the Shipwreck Rapids water ride at Sea World in San Diego, California.

 

More recently, the Archimedes’ Screws are being used in England to generate electricity, in addition to pumping water when needed.  Competitors for the 2012 London Olympic Games are training on a canoe course in which the pumps are now being used as both pumps and generatorson an energy neutral course.

 

This invention is an example of a sustainable machine that has proven its worth over the test of time.

It uses only minimal amounts of energy from a renewable source and can continually operate, and now can be modified to produce electricity.

The basic principle of an Archimedes screw

Is shown in the diagram above.  If the handle at the top was turned in an anti-clockwise direction it would draw the water up from the lower level to the top.

 

The Archimedes screw pump is an example of simple machine

Application that has survived the ages to fit diverse products in the modern era. Historians date the first evidence of Archimedes screw pumps being used hundreds of years before Archimedes was born, and it is so-named because tradition suggests it was invented by Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC) natural philosopher and scientist. However, archaeological evidence has led others to posit its earlier invention in Assyria (modern day Iraq) or Egypt; Archimedes simply improved upon an earlier design.

The combination of two common simple machines: the inclined plane and the cylinder. The plane wraps around the cylinder, making a common screw shape. The rotation of the Archimedes screw forces liquid or small materials upwards. This movement is intended to process liquid, irrigate, move corn, and many other applications.

And as the cylinder is turned a small quantity of water is scooped up. The inclination of the cylinder is such that at the next revolution the water is raised above the next thread, whilst the lowest thread scoops up another quantity. The successive revolutions, therefore, raise the water thread by thread until it emerges at the top of the cylinder.

Is believed to have been invented to remove water from the hold of Greek navy ships when Archimedes worked for his cuisine the king. The revolving screw-shaped blade inside an angled pipe was turned by a handle, scooping up water and carrying it to the top.

The Archimedes screw pump had been widely used to pump water from low-lying rivers for crop irrigation since Egyptian pharos times, as it is still used to date in the Nile delta in Egypt.

Declined after the invention of steam power, combustion engine and electricity. Until then about a quarter of the word population used the Archimedes screw pump before the industrial revolution.
