What’s an inverter?

Inverters convert the electricity created by your solar panels (DC, or direct current) into electricity that can be used by the plugs in your house (AC, or alternating current). When you have solar panels installed on your roof, you’ll also get an inverter as part of your system. Here’s more information on how solar inverters work.

SunPower inverters

SunPower, based in California, is known for making the most efficient solar panels on the market, and they also make some of the solar industry’s leading inverters. Their 3000m and 4000m inverters are designed for optimal performance over the long-term, and both models come with a standard 10-year warranty. They’re highly efficient, with peak efficiencies over 96%. Because their inverters integrate some parts that are normally separate, that lowers the cost of materials and labor, so you pay less.

Monitoring system

Along with an inverter, you’ll want to use some type of monitoring system to see how your solar system is performing. The SunPower monitoring system offers three different ways to check on your solar system: a wireless display, a web interface, and an iPhone/iPod app. The LCD display is a small device that can be mounted on your wall, and shows what your solar panels are currently up to. The web interface lets you look at data over days, months, and years, and the iPhone app brings you data on the road.
